Dear Pace family: I was terribly sorry to learn of Steve Pace's death. While I did not have any personal contact with him, I always considered him among the very best of aviation historians. His works were always meticulously researched and carefully written--the hallmarks of a real craftsman and a true historian. The field of aerospace history is much the poorer for his passing. Dear Pace Family: I was Steve's editor at Zenith Press/Voyageur Press. When I first heard of Steve's passing I hoped (against hope apparently) for days that it was just Internet speculation started on one of the aviation message boards. Confirmation received last week came as a huge shock despite the days to prepare for the worst. I want you to know how great it was to work with Steve. He always carried himself in a friendly, enthusiastic manner. (And, he was always on time!) In fact, just a few weeks back he was bouncing ideas off of me for his next book and sharing photos with us of his beloved Mustang. When my brother Jim and I were about
10 and 12 Steve took us to the drag races at SRI. It was amazing,Steve had a pit pass as he was dragster journalist and photographer. There was smoke and flames everywhere, I was afraid but I had my big brother to watch over me. When we left Steve's car broke down and we wound up walking on what was then the newly built Interstate 5 freeway. The police took us home and I think I can speak for all of us, it's the only time I've wanted to be in a police car.

I am still in too much shock to really express my self. I loved my brother so much and have not seen much of him lately. I am so glad I did see him in Dec when our other brother Joe Passed. Steve was so gifted in so many ways. He was our big brother and we will miss you more than he would ever know. Love Deanna - as Steve always would say Sis or Big Red Love ya

Steve took my brother Jim and I to Seattle International Raceway (SRI) what an excitement as he had a pit pass and we could see flames shooting everywhere with screeching tires. It was almost frightening, but hey, I had my brother there. When we left to go home, Steve's car just stopped on what was then the new Interstate 5 in Washington State (built for the state fair initially) and so off we go walking trying to keep up with out long legged brother (I was about 10) and short at that. It wasn't too long before a police officer pulled over listened to Steve's explanation and told us to get in the police car. He was nice enough to drive us home to Kent, Washington and reminded Steve that he would have to go get the car.
Such excitement-that's how it always was with Steve,
