Obituary of Roger Alan Shingledecker

Roger Alan Shingledecker came into this world on February 26, 1929 in Mishawaka, Indiana and passed away at home with family and friends peacefully on May 6, 2009. He is survived by the love of his life, Rita (Blanchfield), of 58 years, and their children Karen (Roy) Marchesini and Mark (Cyndee) Shingledecker. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Emily (Travis) Morris, Peter (Angie) Marchesini, Karma (Santos) Reyes, Gabe Lakin, and Sam Shingledecker. Preceding his death were his parents Owen & Mildred, and brother Owen. He is survived by his siblings Frances, Annabelle, and Loren who reside in Indiana. Roger retired 18 years ago as a truck driver for West Coast Grocery under Teamsters Union 313. He led his life passionate about family, friends, and dancing. He expressed his passion towards his wife by having five screws put into his back, so he could replace both knees, so he could dance every Friday night beside her. They danced together weekly for all but the last 4 years of their married life. After he retired in 1991, he left his mark on this world through his community service. As a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, he faithfully served as an usher and Eucharistic minister for many years. He was collaborative in the Fern Hill Square Park Project, 84th Street beautification; and as a liaison of the South End Neighborhood Council, he was instrumental in the Larchmont Elementary school safety traffic light. For his efforts, he received the "7th Annual Neighborhood Unsung Hero" award for the south-end neighborhood in 1999 from the city of Tacoma. As a lifetime member the Elks, he rallied the community for the annual Easter egg hunts and food drives. He also belonged to the Eagles and AMVETS. A rosary will be recited at 12:30 and the funeral mass will follow at 1:00 at St. Ann's Catholic church on Monday May 11, 2009. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Ann's Catholic church in honor of Roger's life. Viewing will be Saturday 10:00 to 3:00 at Piper-Morley-Mellinger Funeral Home.
