We were able to have the most beautiful church service at Visitation Church in South Tacoma on July 10th 2015 with Father Wickert and two of our family members Tom and Corine Swindale as mass servers. We had a wonderful turn out of family and friends. All the Fitzpatrick children were able to attend. Following was a reception at the Star center for visiting, reminiscing and good food. The inurnment followed with close family members at Calvary cemetery where James Fitzpatrick's ashes were placed. It was an all around beautiful day!

Following my divorce with Tim McIntyre in 1993, I felt I had also divorced the family that had been mine for 18 years. Fortunately Genny McIntyre and Auntie Marilyn Fitzpatrick wrote to me many times, and I generally wrote back. But as things do over the years, Genny and I were down to a yearly exchange of Christmas newsletters and a couple of visits when I was in the area, but Auntie Marilyn and I lost touch.
I know there have been many challenges in the McIntyre-Fitzpatrick families in the past 22 years, and now that I live two hours from Palm Springs I felt it was time to renew my relationship with that side of "my" family. I was hesitant - after all, I'm old and fat now, and so much has changed in my life as well. But I was so glad I did. I just wish I could have done so sooner, before Uncle Jim's memory started to fade. Being with Auntie Marilyn, Kathy and Richard, and Gary reminded me of what wonderful people they are, and how much I've missed out by not keeping in touch.
I felt welcomed back into the fold, and wanted so very much to be at Uncle Jim's memorial service and to see the rest of the family again. Unfortunately I can't make it. I really wish Auntie Marilyn could be there, too, and I hope Ryan and others videotape the service, eulogy, and the family so we can both experience the celebration of Uncle Jim's life.
While I visited them on Valentine's Day, I was given a copy of a letter Uncle Jim hand-wrote to his grandson Scott on Dec. 5, 1989. He extoled the achievements of his generation - "outer space technology… microchip, computers, human rights…" and challenged his grandson's generation to confront the problems of "feeding & housing the needy, drugs, curtailing children & women abuse, environmental problems, continuing the peace movement, balancing the budget, etc." Wow I didn't realize he was a Democrat! J He was, however, a good Christian, and a good Catholic who lived his faith. I think he would have LOVED Pope Francis.
Uncle Jim also gave some advice to his grandchildren:
1. Be strict, but content with yourself at all times, for you can only be just you.
2. Do your very best at all times and then accept all outcomes.
3. Do not postpone happiness to the future. Find it with the moment no matter what.
4. Most things that are disturbing in life can be eliminated by asking yourself, "Is it all that important; does it really make that much difference?"
5. Be willing to forgive no matter what.
6. More important than all else, keep God at all times in your life. Without Him you are in deep trouble. My dad said it all much simpler: Believe in yourself, believe in God, and work like heck.
He concluded, "Okay, now go out in the world and do the job and come back in 50 years and let me know how it all worked out. My love and prayers to my grandchildren now and forever, Grandfather Jim."
Well, I'm sure he'll see for himself in 2039 from his cloud in Heaven how his grandchildren made out. No matter the outcome I know he'll be as proud of them as he was of his own children. Rest in peace, Uncle Jim. Love, Cindy McIntyre

The beauty of this life is, Gramps, now you can hold and cuddle Grams as you summit any mountain you want! Each one of us will forever hold a little piece of you with us. I chose your adventurous spirit.
Thanks for creating this spectacular and oh so loving family with Grams. Your legendary hiking and business venture stories have shaped me into the young, determined gal I am today.
I know you never knew that Facebook was invented, Gramps- but I trust you hear these words. Sending so much love and gratitude to you, wherever you may be!

Legends say that hummingbirds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy and celebration. Hummingbirds open our eyes to the wonder of the world and inspire us to open our hearts to loved ones and friends. Like a hummingbird, we aspire to hover and to savor each moment as it passes, embrace all that life has to offer and to celebrate the joy of everyday. The hummingbird's delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning and that laughter is life's sweetest creation.
Thanks for being my hummingbird Gramps. I love you and will remember you always.

To All the family and friends: Jim Fitzpatrick was a true gentleman, family man, business man and outdoor enthusiast. He lived a great life, full of adventure and care. When I think of Jim I see his kind eyes and ever-present smile. He truly was a patriarch who gave love, created great examples for others to follow. His love of the mountains and hiking lives on with his children, grandchildren and now his great-grandchildren as they follow in his footsteps and continue the adventure and love of the mountains and challenges they provide. We will all miss Jim but what better memories could a man leave behind for all of us to remember him by? We are all blessed to have known Jim. God Bless!

Dear mom, You have my thoughts and prayers with you daily. We know there is no greater loss than your husband and our father. He gave us our life and he gave you the love to make it. We were all blessed to have known and had such a kind loving man in our lives. He was the best example any family could ever have. He will never be forgotten, but maybe loved an appreciated even more every day of my life. Love daughter Kathy
