MAJ Patricia A. Leonard, USA, Retired posted a condolence
Sunday, March 30, 2014
I first met Sam in 1981 when I was assigned as the Personnel Officer at the 6211th US Army Garrison (US Army Reserve), Presidio of San Francisco. He was my immediate boss at the 124th ARCOM at Fort Lawton reference officer personnel management. He came often to inspect our headquarters and I was always impressed at how well he knew Army personnel regulations. Later in 1988 I moved to Seattle and was hired as the Personnel Management Officer for all the full-time Soldiers (AGR) assigned throughout our 3 state area and I worked directly for Sam. He was my mentor and after voluntarily serving on Active Duty during Desert Storm in 1990 for almost five years, I became disabled in June 1995. Sam hired me back as an Army Civilian where I served under him until September 2009 when I retired. He envisioned and asked me to create and then run the Fort Lawton Customer Service Center for 14 years where we served over 65,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airman,Coast Guarders and families. We made military ID cards, issued vehicle stickers, notarized wills and powers-of-attorney, and provide TRICARE and military benefit information. He was a great man, my mentor, and close friend. It was an honor to serve under him and he will always have a very special place in my heart. My love and blessings go out to his family and those who knew him. He will be greatly missed, a true American hero.

I served with Colonel Jones(RET) at the 124th USARCOM. Our offices were across the Hall from each other. Although we did not work together, we often spoke in the hall. The Colonel was always cheerful and happy, and full of good advice. The Colonel will be missed by all that knew him, he is in a better place, along with my wife, MSG(RET) Leanna S. Rolle. Sam was a young sole at heart and truly lived life to the fullest. Sam always had a big smile on his face and was a lot of fun to talk to. Sam loved his family and friends and spoke about his time spent with them. Sam's spirit and his zest for life inspires us. He will be missed.

Sam was an excellent listener and conversationalist. When the discussion would turn energetic his persona would become "Real Italiano"; Sam spoke Italian very well! I believe it was due to osmosis or a process of assimilation to his beloved wife Mina. SIgnor Sam loved people; he had uncanny "hidden" eyes (20/20 no glasses at his ripe age, by the way) for all that was young and beautiful, including flowers. Sam was short in stature but he looked taller and he truly seemed taller in many other ways. Sam had the heart of a giant . His many visits to the Kirby home will be remembered and certainly missed.

Although I didn't realize it at the time, my direct boss Sam provided me with the best time I had in my Army career, 1978-1985 at Fort Lawton. Thank you for all you taught me.

Col. Sam Jones, will always be one of the kindest most influential people ever to grace my life. He was always looking after folks, making sure everyone had what they needed and didn't sweat the small stuff. He never forgot a birthday. My daughter Ava, now 17, adored his cards and always looked forward to them. Most of all, I'll remember how much he loved his family, his friends and "parties." He was truly larger than life. Warmest Regards & Deepest Sympathy, Diane & Ava Oakley

Sam was my first Army Reserve boss March 1973, later he insisted I apply for an AST position. He became my first civil service boss December 1973. When I told Sam I decided to to attend Officer Candidate School, he said it was about time. March 2013 he attended my retirement party from civil service. He arrived early about 6 hours early. The General Manager of the Renton Events Center told me there was elderly gentlemen sitting in his car. I invited Sam to help me set up my awards. Sam immediately took charge and started giving me orders where to place the plaques. Sam I am very honored you were able to attend my retirement and knowing you these last forty years. Rest in peace, I know you will be looking after the young Soldiers in heaven.

When I met Sam in 1997, it was a real delight. I saw a man of true character, a soldier, an advocate to others, available to all as a resource and historical knowledge.
We enjoyed a long friendship and oftentimes spent Friday either at lunch or early happy hour at Szmanias, Chinooks, or another local restaurant. I certainly like hearing his stories, providing fatherly advice (most of us were younger!), and telling jokes. He saved my butt a few times during my last 3 years in the Army. He was kind to a fault, and would defend his subordinates and friends as well.
Thank you Sam for your loyal friendship, memories, and laughs!

Sam was more than just a friend; he was an amazing person. He was always so kind and considerate to everyone that he came in contact. I can’t thank him enough for his untiring support over the years at the 124th ARCOM and 70th RSC headquarters. He was a true father, gentleman, and a soldier! His passing will not only leave a void in my life, but in the hearts of everyone who knew him. My sincere thoughts and prayers are with his family this day. With deepest sympathy.

Psalm 90:10 states that a normal life span is 70 years but if because of special mightiness 80. Mr. Jones certainly lived a long life and I'm sure was dearly loved by his family and friends. May you all find comfort and hope in our Heavenly Fathers promise to very soon bring about a changed condition to this earth where sickness and death will be done away with (Rev. 21:4,5) and there will be a bringing back to life instead of losing. (John 5:28,29)

Sam was a giving and loyal friend. Sam was many different things to many different people for many different reasons. His passing will only enhance the gift he gave to the world. He is truly a National treasurer. I will never forget that he gave so much and asked for so little in return. May Sam Rest in God's hands and his spirit stay in my heart forever. Bud Ray
