Harriet A. (Martin) Barragar
Born December 16, 1913 in Seattle to Mary Abrams (a first twin born in Seattle) and Arthur Lawley, member of the Lawley Shipbuilders in Boston. She died 93 years Later, June 15, 2007 in Tacoma. Attended schools in the Burien district, graduated from Highline High School. It was a talented musical family sisters Barbara and Marge, mother Mary and father Arthur, all involved in music and concerts. Her father organized the model yacht club and raced on Green Lake.
Tom Martin and Harriet in the forties were married and lived on Waunces Prairie, the sight of the family coal mine in Centralia. Tom served in the Burma area and Harriet worked for the Pacific Tel. Co. in Centralia, Olympia and Tacoma.
In the fifties, they moved to Fox Island where they built their home and lived till Tom died. Harriet lived on the west side of the island for over 50 years, known as the Brick Yard caring for pets, garden, friends, etc.
Belonging to a group of retired telephone ladies that brailed manually for the blind, meeting weekly, and turning in work they did during the week at home. Harriet was the lone remaining member, spent 4 hours a day brailing.
In the last 23 years, she was married to Paul another retired telephone person with Pacific NW Bell who continued to live on the island and add to the beauty of the area. Harriet became hostess at our private deck bashes, Pioneer functions, lunches, dinners, fundraisers. Pappy's Invitational Classic Bash for 17 years the day after Thanksgiving for local golfers from PNB, BC Tel.
All our friends thought the world of Harriet and enjoyed hero as a friend and great lady. Condolences may be sent to any blind services.
